Junior Choir

For Singers Who:
  • Are in Grade 3 - 6
  • Are passionate and excited about singing
  • Love connecting and collaborating with other singers
  • Are open to all types and styles of music
Members of the Junior Choir build musicianship and long-lasting friendships in a joyful and creative environment.  In the Junior Choir, we focus on building healthy vocal production and music literacy skills in a fun, supportive and welcoming community. With joy and laughter, choristers begin to build their independence, with the help of our apprentices and peer mentors.  Musicianship (sight-singing and theory) activities take place in tailored small groups within rehearsals, as well as take home practice.

The Junior Choir performs twice a year with all of the Canta Mara choirs, as well as in community performances throughout the Annapolis Valley.

The Canta Mara Junior Choir is conducted by Alana MacPhee, accompanied by Victoria Dunn.  Literacy Instructors are Victoria Dunn, Amy Cameron and Neko Caulfied, with additional support and mentorship provided by our Intermediate & Senior apprentices.
Rehearsals
  • Wednesdays at St James Anglican Church Hall, 18 Prospect Ave. Kentville
  • Group 1: 3:45pm - 5:45pm
  • Group 2: 4:15pm - 6:00pm

Junior Choir does not require previous experience. Because all of our choirs overlap in age, we are able to provide a rewarding and satisfying experience for every singer, regardless of experience. It is essential for each young artist’s development that they are placed in the choir level that is right for them.  All singers are asked to participate in a musical “Meet & Greet”, our placement interview, where the conductor will determine which choir is the best fit based on your child’s age and musical experience.

The Junior Choir Fee is $525.00 for the year.

As a registered non-profit charitable organization, it is important to us that our program is accessible to as many children and youth as possible. We keep our fees as low as we can, and everything the choristers need for their learning and success is wrapped up into one fee

We have flexible payment plan options, as well as opportunities all year long to fundraise to offset any choir-related costs. This amount can be used at any time or accumulated over your years with the choir.  We also offer a Bursary Program for our families.

Fees include everything the choristers need for the whole year! This includes:

  • Tuition for full rehearsals and small group music literacy instruction
  • All music, music folder and Canta Mara choir bag
  • Literacy Program materials and supplies
  • T-Shirt and full Formal Attire for performances.
  • Specialized Professional Workshops and Guest Clinicians
  • Fun performances, community events, social gatherings and end of term banquet

Music education, singing and all the benefits that come with being part of a choir should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial situation. Our bursary program for families helps to cover registration costs each season. Applications for financial support are completed as part of the registration process.

We are grateful to all our generous donors who make our bursary program possible, particularly Mud Creek Rotary who has supported this program for many years. If you wish to donate to the bursary program, to help ensure that finances are not a barrier for any chorister, please visit our Support Us page.

The Canta Mara Chorister Apprenticeship Program provides mentored leadership and collaborative experience to selected members of our junior, intermediate and senior choirs.  They are an integral part of the artistic and caregiving team and serve as positive role models for the choristers of Canta Mara.
