Canta Mara Youth Choirs of the Annapolis Valley (formerly the Annapolis Valley Honour Choir) is recognized nationally for its excellence in music education and capacity for community building. A vibrant part of the Annapolis Valley’s cultural fabric for over 35 years, there are approximately 200 choristers ranging from Grades 2-12 in four choirs, representing communities from the Kempt Shore to Granville Ferry.
Artistic Director Heather Fraser curates a music education program for each of our choirs that not only lays the foundations of music making, but stretches their minds and fills their hearts. Our program is complete and comprehensive, focusing on nurturing healthy vocal development, strong musicianship skills and engaged community leaders. Canta Mara offers the opportunity for choristers to work with professionally trained faculty in weekly rehearsals and workshop settings. This includes a full music literacy program, a chorister apprenticeship and leadership program, multiple performances, community engagement activities, and cultural exchange travel opportunities.
The choir provides a powerful means for young musicians to build confidence - to strengthen their unique voice and express their true selves in a safe, supportive space. Choir members feel a collective sense of teamwork and responsibility, learn the value in being committed to something larger than themselves, and share in a common vision that brings beauty to the world.

Experience the magic of music and joy when our choir takes to the stage. The choirs perform two full-length concerts each season and participate in community events to raise awareness and funds for local projects, such as the “Shall We Dream” workshops on cultural understanding and the “Don’t Be Afraid” campaign supporting LGBTQ youth. They also excel in the Annapolis Valley Music Festival and have represented Nova Scotia at the National Music Festival multiple times.
Join us in creating unforgettable musical memories around the world! The AVHC emphasizes musical education and life experiences, with choirs traveling every two to three years. In April 2023, the Senior Choir performed at Carnegie Hall, and the Intermediate Choir visited Toronto. Past destinations include Portugal, Cuba, and various European cities.
Welcoming singers from Grades 2 to 12, we offer four distinct levels tailored to accommodate every child's unique voice and skill set. With an inclusive, nurturing environment and passionate artistic professionals, every child finds their place to shine and grow in music.
