Sing With Us

As a Canta Mara singer, you will create beautiful music with friends, broaden your musical horizons with professional artistic faculty, find and strengthen your unique voice, build confidence through performance, and unify communities through music.

We can’t wait to meet you!

Because our choirs overlap in age, we are able to provide a rewarding and satisfying experience for every singer. It is essential for each young artist’s development that they are placed in the choir level that is right for them. All singers are asked to participate in a musical “meet & greet” placement interview, where our conductors will determine which choir is the best fit for your child.

As the flagship ensemble, Senior Choir requires an audition for entry, ensuring that all members can meet the ensemble's musical standards. This process helps maintain a high level of performance and fosters a cohesive sound within the group.

For Kids, Junior and Intermediate Choirs, these placement interviews are positive experiences - quick, friendly, and fun. They help us get to know you, answer your questions, and find the best place for you or your child in our choirs.

Singers will be asked to:

  • echo back some short, simple melodies
  • sing along with some vocal exercises to help determine vocal range
  • answer some questions about musical background and personal strengths
  • sing O Canada OR Happy Birthday OR a short song of their choice (a portion of a song is fine). There is no accompanist at the interview. It can be a song from school, pop/music theatre, folk, a traditional song from your culture.
  • Intermediate Only: Identify score markings & sight-sing a short, simple musical melody. (NOTE: The ability to read music is not required. This will help us to determine appropriate placement in our literacy groups).

We cannot wait to welcome a new group of singers to the Canta Mara family, and we are so looking forward to seeing you at our interviews!

The senior choir contains singers with a wide variety of experience. On top of vocal potential, the conductor of the youth choir looks for many things in your audition including a positive attitude, a flexible and open learning style, and a willingness to grow and develop as a musician.

Singers will be asked to:

  • sing vocal exercises to help determine vocal range
  • echo back short melodies and rhythms, sing a round
  • answer some questions about musical background and personal strengths
  • sing a short acapella song of your choice (a portion of a song is fine). There is no accompanist at the interview. It can be a song from school, pop/music theatre, folk, a traditional song from your culture, or O Canada (in whatever language you prefer)
  • Sight-sing a short, simple musical passage, complete a music theory sheet (Note: the ability to read music is valued in this ensemble, but not required. This part of the audition will help us to determine where you are in your growth as a musician).

We cannot wait to welcome a new group of singers to the Canta Mara family, and we are so looking forward to seeing you at our spring auditions!
